    Remington Vantage 1200 -- 1 GREAT DEAL !

    By Old School 1

    2011-08-13 17:05:23
1st, I'm not the review writing type of guy. More like Archie Bunker (and I've been called that quite a few times) . A 60 yr old hunter with experience over a broad range of guns. I moved to an over 55 community 5 yrs ago, and it is not convenient to go to my local indoor / outdoor range which is 35 miles away. Wanting to keep my aim sharp, I did some research and decided on a Remington Vantage 1200 (Imported from China for Remington / Crosman by Xisico, their model B-18). Being frugal and on a budget as most people these days, I needed a bargain. The MSRP is $170.00, most stores sell for $150.00, and remanufactured guns can be purchased for $80.00, plus $13.00 shipping when available. (They don't last long at that price!). Today I went to Cabela"s, about 35 miles from home. They have a "Bargain Cave" (a portion of the store for "open box", "new returns", and "off display" items.) Lo & behold, they had 2 in "The Cave". The one I purchased was a "display" The gentleman that sold it to me had worked for Crosman for over 20 yrs and Cabela's for 5 yrs. He advised me that all their guns have trigger locks installed before putting on display, which prevents "dry firing"- devastating to a "springer" air rifle. The rifle had the original box, paperwork, & the appropriate scope and mounting hardware. It was mechanically perfect, with only 2 microscopic chips on the well finished walnut stained semi gloss "Monte Carlo" style stock. (which I touched up with stain). After getting my bargain home, cleaning, lubricating,& touching up, mounting the scope with Loc-tite, along with the stock & trigger screws, I went out back and sighted it in. I was on paper out of the box @ 20 yds. and after about 15 shots, was grouping appr 3/8" ctc! (pretty good). The cocking effort is appr 25-28 lbs. The trigger is decent for a lower priced rifle, and is adjustable for 2nd stage length of pull. Although the "advertised" velocity is 1200 fps with alloy ammo, I found that Crosman Premier Hollow Point "heavies" provided the best groupings. Keep in mind I've only put about 150 pellets through the rifle, so it isn't broken in. I'm averaging 638-670fps with the CHP heavies!..... Real world numbers which will get a bit better after the gun settles in.The provided scope is a 4x32 power non adjusabe AO with a 2 piece mount with a stop pin. Very basis, but suprisingly very good for an "included" scope. Final words, The rifle is NOT the fanciest out there, but is accurate and powerful for it's intended purpose. Best of all, I "WALKED OUT THE DOOR OF CABELA"S FOR $95.00, TAX INCLUDED !!!! If you are looking for well manufactured air rifle (NOT A TOY) that is not only nice looking, and accurate, go get yourself one!

    Fun Gun to Shoot

    By Shoot4Fun

    2011-11-24 12:37:53
For a number of years I have been scouting out high power pellet guns. After looking at a variety of models and manufacturers I settled on the Remington Vantage. The price was right, under $120 and it has a nice feel. I took it out to the woods and within a few shots had the sights locked in. So how good is it? Let's just say a few pesky critters that have been ruining parts of my property are no longer around. The furthest shot was 50 yards and it had plenty of accurate power to hit what I was aiming at. This is going to be my fun, go-to gun for target shooting, squirrel hunting and pesky little critters.

    Great

This is a great gun! Its accurate with and without the scope and very easy to sight in. Due to it being ambidextrous my and my friends (im a lefty) can shoot it easily with out having to use 2 guns. Its definetly not a gun for smaller kids, i would say you have to at least be 5 foot 100lbs and on the stronger side if you dont want to have a wrestiling match with it every time you load it. Since its wood, 6+ pounds, 44.5 inches long, and its shoots 1200fps it really feels and sounds like your shooting a .22, plus it has a kick. This can do anything a .22 can do for a cheaper price, cheaper ammo and is safer. Great job Remington!

    Great buy!

    By Chevota

I bought this one because I like the stock on it. Many of these guns are identical internally, but the prices vary and some like the Remington Summit have a really nice stock but it is reflected in the price. This one was just right with a nice wood design, a 4x scope, but still very inexpensive. I'd rather they had a sightless or scope only version with a muzzle brake, but I just took my iron sights off. Btw, a muzzle brake wouldn't fit on mine, it seems the muzzle braked guns have a slightly smaller diameter barrel :(
The gun is the typical 1000/1200fps power plant, and like most it would not achieve those numbers out of the box. The PBA pellets that are supposed to be 1200 were 1110, and the fastest lead was a Crosman Destroyer at 930fps. Both shy of their advertized numbers, but this is out of the box with less than 50 shots thru it. After break in it just might hit those numbers. I like to use actual energy in ftlbs to measure a guns power, and the Destroyer was at 14.2ftlbs. Not bad, but not that good either. (Note; another Crosman I have with the same exact same power plant hit 1187pba and 1001 w/lead with a peak of 16.5ftlbs out of the box. This is most likely due to one or both seals being better, but after break in your gun should be equal to or better than this, if not then inspect your seals. The piston seal is often damaged from sloppy installation, and the breech sometimes doesn't mate correctly). The next test I did was done after a tune up which involved tearing the gun apart and doing some slight modifications and better American lube. This "tune up" is equivalent to breaking it in and some. The PBA reached 1240fps which = 17.75ftlbs, and several lead pellets broke 1000fps, but the most powerful one was a 7.3gr Daisy pointed at 1036fps and 17.4ftlbs. Btw, almost all tests I've done on all my spring guns, the Daisy pointed came out on top power wise. It seems to me the secret is in the larger skirt which allows more pressure to build before the pellets is finally forced into the barrel, but experiment with different pellets until you find the most accurate for you and your gun because an extra ftlb of energy doesn't help if it misses. I usually use the Crosman and Daisy's only for testing, brands like H&N and JSB are the best for accuracy. More $ and usually mail order only, but worth it.
Another note: The cocking effort is much easier than advertised. They claim 32lbs or so, but I get 21. Big difference! And it starts at only 3lbs, half way is about 16, then only the peak right before it catches is 21lbs. So it's actually very easy to cock.
The trigger is something most everyone complains about, but can be fixed easily for pennies. Same with the scope if you have a parallax problem which will cause a mysterious loss in accuracy which can be fixed for free.
Bottom line: Highly recommended for the price. If you want better performance you'll need to spend a lot more money.

    amazing gun

    By Anonymous

This gun has been a great gun for the entire year I have had it so far. It has great accuracy, power, and durability. You will be able to hit soda cans from 80+ yards away once you have sighted in the scope, and with crosman's wonderful pointed pelets, you will be able to penetrate through both sides of 4 soup cans. But, after a year of work, and about 1500 pelets, my main spring broke, and this is the ONLY reason why am giving this product 4 stars instead of five. I have contacted crosman, and they told my to send it back to be repaired. So if you are worring about anything about this gun, dont, it is amazing and you will not be dissapointed with your purchase.
