NRFTC Success For Competitors, Fans And Shooting

Monday, July 12th, 2010

The 2-day Northeast Regional Field Target Championships ended on Saturday, July 10, and the response from participants and spectators alike was energetic.  Crosman Corporation, long known for innovation and quality in the shooting sports, hosted the sanctioned event at Crosman’s field target ranges in Bloomfield, New York.  More than 60 competitors competed in the event and for many of the spectators, it was their first look at a field target event.

Why compete in a field target shooting event?  According to Crosman’s Shooting Services Manager, Mark DeBoard, “Field target shooting can be done no matter your age, gender or size.  Since this is a sport of discipline, each shooter must use everything he or she has learned to knock down the target.  Breath control, trigger squeeze, range estimation and follow through, are only a few tactics.   But what makes this sport unique is that you can compete at an event like ours, right next to world class shooters.  I can’t think of any other sport that offers such a great opportunity to compete next to the greats.” (more…)

NRFTC Event At Crosman Sold Out

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

This weekend Crosman Corp will welcome shooters from across the northeast (plus a few Southerners) as it hosts the Northeast Regional Field Target Championship right here in Bloomfield.  Competition managers and Crosman spokesmen Ray and Hans Apelles, “The A Team”, along with Crosman staff Ed Schultz and Mark DeBoard have created a challenging course throughout the company’s property.

Over 60 shooters registered for the event, maximizing capacity weeks before the cut-off date and exceeding all expectations.  Recognizing the opportunity, Crosman is rolling out the red carpet by offering a Factory Tour, product demos, some fantastic door prizes and lunch for everyone on Saturday.

Local sports reporter Leo Roth of Rochester’s Democrat and Chronicle (pictured above with Crosman’s Ed Schultz) stopped by the facility last week to learn more about the event and spent the morning getting a first-hand experience with field target shooting. Read his full-page article here.

The Northeast Regional Field Target Championship starts at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 10 and spectators are welcome.

Taking It Outside: Field Match Shooting With Team Crosman

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Chip here, and the video above is from my first experience in a field match. Hunting? Check. Airguns? Got it. Field competitions? Umm…..  So it was with that amount of experience I happily agreed to travel to the small town of Wappingers Falls, New York to compete in the second of five scheduled competitions of the Eastern Field Target Competitors Club, home field of Ray and Hans Apelles (The “A” Team).

Shooting with The “A” Team is one thing, but traveling to their home field representing the company which they endorse, to shoot in one of their competitions puts a bit of pressure on a guy. Thankfully, Mark DeBoard, Director of Shooting Services for Crosman, was behind the wheel and kept things light.  Ray and Hans joined forces with Crosman in 2008 and were very involved with the development of the Benjamin Marauder PCP rifle. The first time Ray entered it in a field competition, he cleaned the course.  Shortly after, a pair of Match Stocks were provided to the two Marauders and these are the guns they use today.  Ray and Hans have won regional and national championships as well as represented the U.S.A. in international competition.

UPDATE: Crosman Adding Quigley Bucket Challenge to NRFTC Weekend

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Crosman recently announced it will be hosting the Northeast Regional Field Target Championship later this summer and this week we have added an additional contest that will surely test the skill of the savviest shooters: the Quigley Bucket Challenge.

The scene from Quigley Down Under (1990) is unforgettable, as Quigley (Tom Selleck), successfully shoots a 17″ bucket at approximately 550 yards not once, but several times. At first glance it may seem like movie magic, but it can be done. But done with an airgun?  It’s all about scale.

With a nod to Jock Elliott for recreating the challenge for airguns, we have assembled a “bucket” target measuring 1.75″ to be placed at 55 yards.  Shooters are to use 10-meter guns (6.5 ftlb limit) sporting open and iron sights or non-magnified sights only. Best-of-5 shots wins.  For those who don’t own a gun that meets these specs or those who just want to take a try at hitting our “bucket”, we’ll have have a few Benjamin Discovery rifles on hand outfitted with the same precision diopter sights like those found on our popular Challenger rifles.

Be sure to check out our custom-made Quigley Bucket Challenge targets after the jump.

The Quigley Bucket Challenge starts at 4pm on Friday, July 9 here at Crosman HQ in Bloomfield, NY.  The Northeast Regional Field Target Championship hosted by Crosman is part of the Eastern Field Target Competitors Club (EFTCC) series and the match begins at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, July 10.  The competition will be conducted under the auspices of AAFTA and International Core rules.  There will be two rounds of 40 shots each for a total of 80 shots.  The available divisions include PCP, Piston, Hunter (all 20 ftlb limit) and WFTF (12 ftlb limit).  Awards will be available for 1st-3rd places in each division.

For more details, directions and a registration form, click here to visit the Crosman NRFTC page.  The match fee is only $5 and includes lunch but don’t wait to register – the deadline is June 1.
