Pumpkins come with the cool crisp air, falling leaves and
warm colors of Fall. They are a favorite of families for carving and
decorating, but what about as airgun targets? Pumpkins will absorb the impact
of a pellet and provide a bright clear surface to sight against.

Just get yourself a sharpy or another permanent marker and
draw some targets on the surface. Be sure the targets are against a safe
background and get shooting. You can create simple traditional targets, or flex
your artistic muscles and draw your favorite varmints and small game.

Be creative and get the family involved. Draw a jack o
lantern face, monsters or any other ghoulish creations you can think of for
Halloween. Shaking up the targets used can make shooting exciting and is a
great way to involve the whole family.

an industry leader is to take a break. We are always focused on the next
project, the next innovation or the next gun that will keep us one step ahead
of our competition. But there are times when we have to pause and get out of
the office and on to the shooting range to see how our products perform in the
hands of shooters.

It is in this spirit that we recently sponsored and
competition shoot in the Northeast Regional Field Target Championships. The shoot,
which took place at the Broome County Sportsmen's Club in Binghamton, NY.
featured over twenty shooters from three states. Some of the Crosman staff
entered, shooting our PCP Discovery.

Manager, Mark DeBoard.

“We agreed to sponsor this event because we feel it is
important to showcase the different types of shooting that are available for
airgunners,” Mark told us. “We want to foster the competitive end of our sport.
It also lets us talk with and hear directly from an important part of our
community. They are getting to talk to directly with some of the fellas making
the guns and ammo they are shooting with. It was all round great experience.”

Along with Mark, other Crosman participants included employees
from pellet fabrication, engineering and quality.

Field target competitions are growing in popularity with
airgunners. Challengers shoot at targets up to 50 yards out with some unique
twists thrown in. Targets can be placed
anywhere on the range– up in trees, behind obstacles, hidden in shadows, on the
water and even behind a moving object; wherever you can hide a target and give
the shooter a realistic experience.
In this particular event, shooters competed in three different classes, depending
on what type of gun they were using.

We asked Mark to offer some tips for shooters new to
Field Target Shooting.

“I would suggest they become very familiar with their
air rifles. For example, where
does your rifle shoot at 10, 30, 40, and 50 yards? Bring cheat sheets
with you to help you remember. The more experienced shooters are also very open
and are usually happy to share what they have discovered about the sport”.

What types of optics or accessories would you recommend?

“I would recommend scopes with Mil-Dots for the longer
shots and lighted reticles for the targets placed in darker areas. A Bipod or similar type of rest is
great to help you steady your shot.
Also something to sit on. Most of the shots you take are from a seated
position and the ground can get pretty hard.”

What did you use during the competition?

a CenterPoint Scope and a bipod.”

What level of shooters would you recommend this type of

“All levels. We were beginners and we all had a great
time. There are multiple divisions with Hunter being the most novice
friendly.”

What was it like to shoot with ‘professional’
shooters?

“The more experienced shooters were extremely helpful

love their sport and they want see it grow.”

Ray and Hans Apelles took 1st and 2nd in the
championships. The father and son
were shooting Prototype Crosman Discovery Match PCP guns equipped with
CenterPoint Optics. These guns,
created specially for Ray and Hans, feature some of the new technology Crosman

Besides sponsoring the event, Crosman also supplied
prizes including a Custom Discovery PCP air rifle, a CenterPoint scope, hats,
knives and ammo. The prizes were
raffled off to the competitors as door prizes. There was also a competitive
raffle where shooters earned tickets based on their performance shooting at
particular targets.

Look for more from Ray, Hans and the experimental PCP
gun right here in Croswords in the

Field Target shooting is a hunting simulation that uses
silhouette targets in the shape of small game and other common airgun targets. Competitors aim to shoot the small
“kill zone” in the center of a larger metal faceplate. On most competition targets, the hit
zone forms the end of a short lever that tips the faceplate backwards when
successfully hit. These targets have to be reset by tugging on a length of cord
attached to the faceplate above the hinge.<span style="mso-spacerun:

small as 3/4 of an inch, to allow the game to grow with the experience of the

random distances from 10 yards out to a maximum of 50 yards. Course’s often set the targets in
environments representative of their natural habitat. Many courses are laid out
so that some of the birds may be up in trees, rabbits hiding in bushes, and

This month is the Kick-Off of the 2008 Outdoor Adventure Road Tour presented by Field & Stream. It is a unique hands-on experience for outdoor enthusiasts. Customers will enjoy an extensive, large-scale "mobile" parking lot event and sale that will showcase outdoor adventure sports. This 20 week, 20-city tour will run until August 3rd, 2008, and will visit a total of 14 states across the Southeast, Midwest, Great Lakes, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.

The event started in Melbourne, FL and Crosman sent Eric Haase to help out in the Airgun Range and talk with some of our customers. Lets check in with Eric and see how the first day went...
Eric can you give our readers who have never attended one of these events an overview of what happens?
[Eric] As you mentioned, this event takes place in the parking lot of various Dick's Sporting Goods locations from now till August. BUT don't be fooled by the sounds of this. We are talking about a hands-on demonstration event that is a great experience for just about every person in the family. If you are into outdoor recreation, shooting, fishing, camping and hiking, you will not want to miss this free event.

Our CROSMAN shooting range gives shooters the opportunity to try several of our pellet guns and airsoft guns before you buy them. There are also fishing demonstrations, yard games for the kids (and adults too) and many great sales to kick off the warm weather season.

How many folks attend over the course of a weekend?
[Eric] Over the course of the 3 day event (Friday 4-9pm, Sat 10-9pm and Sunday 11-6pm), we have anywhere from 650-1000 shooters.

How do you feel an event like this benefits the consumers?
[Eric] I don't believe there is any other venue where you can test an airsoft gun or pellet gun before you make your purchase. We give you that opportunity. And with a Crosman representative at each event, you can ask questions to find the airgun that best suits your needs.

Tell us a little about the shooters coming into the Range?
[Eric] We have had everyone from your first time shooter to law enforcement/military sharp shooters in our range. (Please don't be shy, no one is keeping score). Working with a first time shooter is really great. Teaching gun safety and being part of their first shooting experience is very gratifying.

How does being involved in an event like this benefit Crosman?
[Eric] Providing a safe environment to shoot and learn is one key part to Crosman's efforts with the Outdoor Adventure Tour. An educated (shooter) consumer is always the best (shooter) customer. What better way to teach than to demonstrate and provide a hands on learning opportunity.

Lastly what is your favorite activity at the event?
[Eric] Seeing the expression on a first time shooter's face when they hit that first bulls-eye is my favorite thing!

Another exciting launch at the Shot Show this year was the Crosman Archery line of products. This is a perfect extension of the skills of our company into a whole new area of shooting and hunting. The show provided an opportunity some fans and retailers to get a first look at our line of products. To see how it was received at the show, lets talk to Scott Alread, our archery product manager...

Scott please let our readers in on your background a little. This is not your first time working in archery, where did you come to Crosman from?
No, this is not my first time working in the archery industry. I spent the last 4 plus years managing the bow line for the Bear Archery brand at Escalade Sports as the Product Marketing Manager. During that time I also served on the Archery Trade Association’s Board of Directors and was a part of the team that brought Primos and Bear Archery together. Prior to my tenure at Escalade Sports, I worked with Motorola’s Sports and Outdoors division focused on the management and promotion of their two-way radio consumer line of products. All told, I have spent the last 10 or so years working in the hunting, outdoor, archery industry either in sales, marketing or product management.

How was the reception of the Archery line at the show?
Our new archery line received a very favorable response from our customers at the 2008 SHOT show. Many regions within this country and Canada have recently expanded legal use of the crossbow during hunting seasons and we saw the interest level rise among our key customers. We are optimistic about this line, and are expecting a solid first year in the marketplace.

What were some of the unique challenges of designing and bringing these crossbows to the market place?
Crosman has so many core competencies within stocks, triggers and optics that we were closer than some may have expected out of the gate. The unique challenge was closing the gap with our front end prod design that incorporates limbs, cams and strings. With a great partner like Gordon Composites working with us on the limbs, the challenge then became to simply alter the way Crosman views performance and cycle testing as it relates to archery equipment. Ultimately, there were no real challenges, just opportunities to learn a new way to manufacture high quality shooting equipment.

The Crossbows will be designed and manufactured in the US. Why that decision, why not just bring in product from over seas?
One, this was never up for debate. Crosman felt as strongly as I did that this crossbow line must be designed, tested, and built in the USA. Quality control is too critical as is the cycle testing to allow that to take place outside of our factory. Too many companies make the mistake of moving complete projects overseas and lose those aspects of the manufacturing cycle. Plus, it is paramount to archers that their products are made in the USA and those that are not typically struggle to gain acceptance in the marketplace.

What makes now the right time to launch this product?
Never before have you seen keeping archers retained in the sport, urban deer herd populations so high and states needing revenue more than you see these things now around the country. The crossbow is a logical answer to all of these issues and more and more states are recognizing this fact by adding additional opportunities for the crossbow during their hunting seasons. The average age of today’s archer is at an all time high. The crossbow is a logical next step for archers that can no longer draw their compound bows to stay in the sport and continue to hunt with arrows. Urban deer hunting zones are expanding around the country and the crossbow is an outstanding choice of equipment to meet the needs of an urban deer hunter. As states look for ways to generate additional revenue for wildlife programs, expanded seasons whether it is in youth, or general seasons, the crossbow is becoming more of a viable option for many groups of hunters. Quite frankly, the crossbow is the only category within the archery industry that continues to show steady growth for the last 3 years.

Where do you see this line going in the next year to two years?
We will be adding new crossbows, with integrated front end limb designs, high tech cam systems to store more energy and some exclusive dampening technology not yet seen in the crossbow industry. The next two years will be very exciting for Crosman and our customers as we continue to expand the archery line.

One of the most exciting debuts at the Shot Show this year was the Benjamin Discovery PCP gun. This gun has generated a high level of excitement and even higher expectations. The show provided an opportunity some airgun fans and retailers to get their paws on the gun for the first time. To see how it was received at the show, lets talk to Roy Stefanko, national sales manager for Crosman...

1) How was the reception of the PCP gun at the show?
[Roy] Quite frankly, even better than expected and our expectations were high going into the show. I saw badges in the booth that I recognized, but only as "drive-bys" at past shows. This time, they were "Crosman Campers" and spent hours in the booth. I had more than one 3rd party say that it was the talk of the show and no booth was busier than ours.

2) What were some of the unique challenges of bringing this air gun to the market place?
[Roy] I'll let Ed speak to this, but I would say price was perceived to be a challenge. After the show, I'd say that that fear is unfounded. There is also the concern that the use and operation might be a bit complex for some consumers; however, with the media support and the outstanding tutorials available on our website, I believe that we've met that challenge head on.

3) What makes now the right time to launch this product?
[Roy] There's no doubt that varmint hunting is alive and well and with all of the
limitations on firearms, we have a distinct advantage. I also believe that the ammo price increases make recreational shooting with the Discovery &/or other pellet rifles far more appealing than ever.

4) We have said that this is the launch of a new product category, not just a stand-alone product. Tell us about the potential you see for PCP guns and share if you can some of the things shooters may be seeing from Crosman in the future?
[Roy] All hyperbole aside, there is no limit to what the Discovery PCP is capable of achieving in the marketplace. And if the USA version is any indication, the European SKU's will be every bit the homerun that we've seen here.

I know that other PCP guns are on the drawing board and will be launched within the next few years. With the power plant perfected, we can go a lot of directions including, exotic stocks and other Custom Shop favorites, sound-suppressed versions, semi-auto's, larger calibers, multi-shot, etc.

A New Airgun Is Designed
by Tom Gaylord

After the meeting in New York, a schedule was developed and a project team was assigned to all the tasks that go into designing and fielding a new air rifle. Those who build them one at a time in the basement might not appreciate everything that goes into a new product like this, but there is literature, packaging, education and promotion to consider, not to mention a hundred small but important details on the gun, itself. Just because a couple hand-built prototypes work doesn't mean you're ready to produce them.

And this isn't just a new model. It's a precharged pneumatic - a type of airgun that Benjamin has never made in its over 100 years of existence. When it comes to CO2 and multi-pump pneumatics, everyone knows Crosman and Benjamin Sheridan. In recent years, those lines have made inroads into the world of spring-piston guns, as well.

But PCPs are something new. And this is not only a new model rifle in two calibers, it is a revolutionary new TYPE of PCP - one never before seen from any production manufacturer. On top of that, it comes to market in a revolutionary new way - a complete shooting system in a box - nothing more to buy.

With one powerful stroke, the Crosman Corporation has shattered all the fences and obstacles to PCP ownership - right down to the affordable price. Wouldn't it be nice if the new guns also shot well?

When I originally pitched my idea, I said I believed the guns would have decent accuracy on air. After all, they were already shooting decently on CO2! But imagine my surprise when I began testing the early prototypes of the Benjamin PCP 2000 and discovered they are just as accurate as the thousand-dollar European PCPs!

Remarkable accuracy
I couldn't believe it. Starting at 25 yards, I was getting some five-shot groups smaller than a half-inch, but that's no big deal for a PCP. A PCP can do that well out to 50 yards. And, so could both calibers of the Benjamin PCP 2000, as it turned out! As incredible as it sounds, their groups didn't seem to open up between 25 and 50 yards.

At 50 yards, five .177 Crosman Premier 10.5-grain pellets went into a group that measured just 0.458" center-to-center of the two holes farthest apart. A U.S. dime will easily cover all shots!

The .22-caliber PCP 2000 was even more accurate at 50 yards, putting five 15.8-grain JSB Exacts into this group that measures 0.374" center-to-center between the two holes farthest apart. That is smaller than 3/8"! Crosman Premier pellets were nearly as accurate, but this was the best group shot during the first range test.

I didn't do it once, I did it time after time after time. Not every 50-yard group was a half-inch, just as not all of my groups from a thousand-dollar PCP will be a half-inch, but enough were that I know these two rifle can shoot that well! And the rest were only one-inch or less.

So what DON'T they have?
So that begs the question, what are you giving up when you buy one of these? Well, you do loose the fancy adjustable trigger, though I must say the trigger on these rifles is very usable. It is reasonably light and very crisp. It lacks an overtravel screw, but that's a feature almost anyone can install for themselves. They also haven't got the fancy adjustable stocks, though the one they selected is pretty slick-looking. And the Benjamin is lighter than most of the European PCPs - but wait a minute - that's better!

In short, there is not a lot that you do give up with this very affordable PCP rifle. If you have been sitting on the sidelines waiting for the day when an affordable PCP comes to the market, now is the time to act. There won't be a better package than this one.

It comes to you with a steel breech that has a long 11mm dovetail for airgun scope mounts. It's longer than half the expensive PCP scope rails on the market. It has a built-in pressure gauge called a manometer - something some of the expensive guns don't even have. It has a protective cover to keep the fill nipple clean, which is an absolute must. And the fill nipple is a simple Foster quick-disconnest that shooters find the most desirable fill nipple of all. The accuracy will astound you, but you'll have to determine that for yourself. Fortunately, the low price for the rifle, hand pump and a tin of pellets that puts you in business from the moment you open the box means that PCPs have never been more affordable.

The 2000 psi fill level means almost anyone old enough to shoot this rifle will also be able to fill it from the hand pump that comes in the package. If you do use a scuba tank instead of the hand pump, you will get a huge number of additional fills before that tank has to go back to the dive shop for a refill. You will get around 30-35 full-power accurate shots on each fill of air. The exact number depends on the distance at which you are shooting.

When you want to just fill the gun and shoot a lot, an inexpensive CO2 adapter converts this rifle from air to CO2 operation. Then it is easy to fill the gun from a standard paintball tank. For indoor use or for outdoor casual plinking, CO2 is the way to go. It even has enough power for close-range hunting of small game.

As for which caliber to get, choose .177 if you want to shoot informally, punch paper targets or try your hand at the sport of field target. The Benjamin PCP 2000 is certainly accurate enough to put you in the winner's circle.

If you want to hunt small and medium-sized game, dispatch pests and shoot informally at larger targets, choose the .22. It packs a real wallop downrange.

But here's the best idea of all. Get the caliber you want most right now and later you can buy the other one. You won't need a second pump, so the price of just the rifle will be even lower than the first one! You will still have less money invested in these two air rifles that if you bought just one budget-priced PCP from another manufacturer!

The Idea Matures
by Tom Gaylord

As I thought about how to present my idea to the management at Crosman, the idea itself began taking on substance. I knew I would be talking to men and women who understand the airgun market quite well, but who do not know the PCP sector of that market as thoroughly as the sectors in which they currently make airguns. They are not without some experience, having marketed Logun PCPs for a brief period several years back, but they have never developed the technology in-house.

My idea, however, was a bridge from the CO2 and even multi-pump pneumatic guns they already make, because the operating pressure I wanted would be substantially lower than other PCPs. I knew it would work because I have seen other modern PCPs operate at lower pressures. The remarkable UFST rifle from Mac-1 operates between 1650 psi and 1800 psi and gets over 50 powerful shots on one fill of air. And custom airgun maker Gary Barnes made a .25 caliber PCP for me that got 27 foot-pounds of energy and ten shots on a fill of just 800 psi. So the idea for a lower-pressure sporting PCP was not hard to imagine. The pressure I envisioned was not that much greater than the pressure in the existing line of Benjamin CO2 guns. So the amount of work required to modify the firing valve for higher-pressure air would not be that daunting.

Another benefit to using air is you get about a 25 percent boost in velocity. The thinner atoms in air flow through firing valves much faster than the larger molecules of carbon dioxide. With such a boost, I knew the gun they developed would be in the same ballpark as the rest of the PCPs, in terms of velocity and power.

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this was the perfect time to do more than just invent a new type of PCP. With a little more effort, we could also solve the entire shooting solution, by selling a complete shooting system instead of just an airgun. Don't just sell the gun and make the customer wonder how to get it filled like all the other airgun manufacturers do. Sell the entire system - airgun, hand pump, pellets and technical instructions - all in the same package! That way there could be no confusion for the customer. They couldn't forget to buy something if it all came in the same package! And, because I was dealing with the Crosman Corporation, I figured the price could be kept on the unbelievable side of affordable!

I put my presentation together and used the Benjamin AS 392T as the gun to be converted. It was easy for me to PhotoShop that rifle into a good-looking sporting PCP, though I hoped the engineers would stock it with a longer forearm. To overcome any objections to using the hand pump to fill the rifle, I recommended that we show a video of a teenaged girl filling it. I have demonstrated hand pumps at numerous public events over the years and I know that most healthy 18-year-old women can fill a gun to 2,000 psi without problems.

Crosman and I entered into discussions of the gun project, which is when I learned that they were actively seeking to enter into the precharged market, and had been discussing various options at the time I made my approach. They liked my idea of the complete package and we began development of what would become the Benjamin PCP 2000. It should be easy to see where the model designation came from.

Our preliminary discussions were conducted on the phone and through the internet, but then they brought me to Rochester to discuss some concrete details. Their production manager had put together a working prototype that he surprised me with at that meeting, and it turned out that everyone was astounded by the performance potential of 2,000 psi air. Instead of the AS392T, he based his work on the popular Crosman 2260 rifle, which in retrospect made more sense, since it was already built with a very PCP-like profile. And, because this rifle exists in both .177 and .22 calibers, he built two prototypes.

At that meeting we discussed details of the new gun. Making a .177 made a lot of sense, since there are more .177 shooters out there. I felt that a longer steel breech was necessary to hold the large scope that shooters would undoubtedly want to put on the rifle. But they surprised me by including a manometer (pressure gauge) built into the rifle. Expensive European PCPs have such gauges, but a lot of the lower-cost PCPs do not. This was a real step towards quality.

When I hefted the prototypes and looked over the velocity figures they got, I knew this was the gun we wanted. There were still many details to work out, but the basic gun was there. However, they had one more surprise for me. There was a second spreadsheet of velocities for each caliber that represented the output of the rifles on CO2! The engineer who designed the gun had even labeled the spreadsheet Dual Fuel - thus coming up with what will perhaps become a household name in airgunning.

Something incredible had happened when he ran the guns on CO2. They were actually more powerful than they had been when they were standard CO2 models. The new valve that was created for air was also more efficient with carbon dioxide gas, and it gave over a hundred shots before needing a refill!

by Tom Gaylord

It started with an idea
Everyone has had a "great idea" at one time or another. You know what I mean, a What They Ought To Do kind of idea. Most of those ideas die as daydreams, but once in a rare while one comes along at the right time and also happens to be the idea everyone is looking for.

I approached Crosman in October of 2006 about an idea I had on how to convert one of their stock CO2 rifles to operate on air. It wasn't something hard to do - heck, it was something that many hobby airgunsmiths had already done. But I wanted to do something different than a standard conversion. I wanted to create an entirely new airgun, and not one that Crosman Corporation was making at the time - or had ever made! I wanted to create a new type of precharged pneumatic (PCP) rifle.

Something new
My idea was to take a current CO2 rifle from the Benjamin line and convert it to use high-pressure air, only not such high pressure that filling it from a hand pump would be difficult. Because filling a precharged airgun has been the biggest roadblock to the popularization of this type of powerplant thus far. Filling, and, of course, the high cost of the gun.

Precharged airguns have so much going for them
Precharged airguns act like most shooters imagine all guns should act. They are trouble-free, highly accurate and they require no special techniques to get them to shoot well. They can operate in very cold weather without suffering a great power loss and all you need is the gun and pellets. Once they are filled, there is no pumping the gun, no worry about the outdoor temperature, and you certainly don't have to learn any special gun-holding techniques. Just shoot and shoot, until the gun needs to be refilled, which these days won't be for many shots.

Filling is the problem
Precharged guns are so desirable that once shooters hear about all their benefits they want them. Until they learn about the filling! Until now you either had to fill a PCP gun from a scuba tank or from a special high-pressure hand pump, either of which was a significant additional expense. The standard fill pressure of PCP guns has hovered around 3,000 pounds per square inch (psi), which is difficult to achieve with a hand pump. Up to about 2,000 psi the pumping is relatively easy, but above that point it gets progressively more difficult, and over 2,500 psi, there are adult men and women who lack the strength and body weight to operate the pump. So filling PCPs has been a major drawback.

And so is cost
PCPs have traditionally made by companies catering to a few thousand shooters in each country, shooters with the financial resources to afford the best guns. Because the guns are so inherently accurate, the makers have naturally used the finest barrels, finishes, wood stocks and expensive internal components like regulators - all of which has driven the price of the guns very high. Most European PCP rifles today sell for $800 and higher. The few models that cost less than $500 are Chinese airguns of questionable reliability. So cost has been another major roadblock to the popularization of the PCP.

Crosman could change that!
My flash of insight was that the Crosman Corporation could change the face of PCP airguns if they put their resources to the problem, and if they didn't go about it in what many would consider the conventional way. If Crosman could convert a CO2 rifle to operate on air, and if the pressure at which the firing valve operated was 2,000 psi instead of 3,000 psi, the world would have the first affordable PCP that could also be easily filled from a hand pump! And Crosman could keep the cost down on such a rifle like no other airgun company in the world. That was the foundation of my idea.

I didn't design the parts of a gun, nor did I build a prototype of anything. I simply defined what the airgun world wanted and had never known who to ask. And now the Crosman Corporation fell into my plans because, frankly, they are the only company in the world that was poised to do what I thought needed to be done. So I prepared a presentation for them.
